The Drop Weight Tear Tester (DWTT) evaluates fracture resistance in ferritic steels used for pipelines and pressure vessels. By subjecting notched specimens to controlled impact, it determines a material's resistance to brittle fracture propagation. Available in standard, high-capacity, and low-temperature configurations with impact energies from 20,000J to 120,000J.
Impact energies from 20,000 to 120,000 joules at impact velocities of 5-8 m/s, on specimens of 300×75 mm and 3-50 mm thickness, at test temperatures from -100°C to +20°C.
The drop weight tear test measures a steel’s resistance to running fracture — the property that determines whether a crack in a gas pipeline arrests or propagates. Pipeline grades are routinely qualified by DWTT under API and ASTM requirements.
